Student Voice Team Joins KEAT in Thanking Governor Beshear
On Tuesday, June 10, the Kentucky Education Action Team and 14 members of our Student Voice Team convened at the State Capitol to publicly thank Governor Steve Beshear and the General Assembly for restoring education funding to 2008 levels. Ashton Bishop of Green County Middle School, Meghana Kudrimoti of Dunbar MSTC, Gentry Fitch of West Jessamine High School and Andrew Brennen of Dunbar High School addressed the gathering, sharing the Student Voice Team’s experience leading a student campaign to promote adequate school funding and urging state officials to continue to fight for a deeper investment in Kentucky students.
At the event, Beshear said he is thankful that lawmakers “overcame a tough budget and made significant investments in our schools and children.” And later that day, State Education Commissioner, Terry Holliday, tweeted: “I was blown away today by the Prichard Committee and the PC Student Voice Team event thanking Governor Steve Beshear and legislators for education budget support.”
The Kentucky Student Voice Team is an independent, youth-led, statewide organization that supports students as research, policy, and advocacy partners to ensure Kentucky’s education system is as equitable, just, and as excellent as it can be. Until 2021, it was part of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, an independent, nonpartisan, citizen-led organization working to improve education in Kentucky—early childhood through postsecondary.
