After the election, my school was filled with confusion, uncertainty and even fear. I was shocked and still trying to wrap my brain around the outcome of the election, but for some students at my school the election could possibly alter the course of their lives.

“I’m an undocumented immigrant from Mexico” were the words my classmate uttered a few days after the election. What she did was very brave because announcing that you are undocumented is like saying you have leprosy. “I’m currently a DACA student. This permit only allows me to work & get my drivers license. If Donald Trump wanted to, he could take away this Act and I would go back to Mexico because I would no longer have the opportunities I have now.”
DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and it’s a policy made during the Obama Administration saying that any undocumented person who has spent most of his or her life in the U.S. has 2 years to apply for a job before it expires. Without this, the chances of my classmate getting a job are slim and if she doesn’t have the money to pay her tuition, she can’t go to college. There are many students in her shoes but they are too afraid to talk about it. Talking about politics is great but we need to be able to understand what others are going through and be open minded to both sides of an issue.
